It is in the space between the original
photographic source and its collaged fragments - a
space marked by ambiguity - that Friedberg stakes the
terms of her personal vision. Discursive yet
inscrutable, rigorous, poetic, and fiercely personal,
Friedberg's encaustic photocollages of 1980-1981
provided the bridge into her sustained dialogue with
the encaustic medium and with the displaced narrative,
which continues today.
